Weekly letter from St Luke's - 5 March 2021
Dear Parish Friends
Attached are the notice paper and service sheets for this weekend. Note that there will be a service on Saturday evening, 6pm on Zoom.
Our Sunday readings include the Ten Commandments from Deuteronomy, and Jesus clearing the temple of merchants and money changers from the gospel of John. What these both have in common is that they show God demonstrating that there is a better way to live in relationship with each other and with God. For the people of the Exodus, the Ten Commandments form the basis of their religious and social life, building them into a community in a covenantal relationship with God. Jesus’ response to the scene in the Jerusalem temple is complex, but it includes the declaration that God is no longer to be met within the intricate system of sacrifice and temple taxes, but rather through the person of Jesus himself, in other words a new covenant relationship. Where do we see God? It might be in the beauty of a mountaintop sunrise, the bread we share at communion, or the stillness of a candle flame. But the gospel message is that it is through Jesus, our risen saviour, that we know and are known by God
Yours in Christ
Rev’d Timothy
